Josh and Caden Russell love the fact that the woodwork in their colonial ‘Federal’ style home (central stair, symmetrical layout) is all original and includes several species and cuts of wood (oak, maple, and pine). The family enjoys the operable fireplace while watching the sun set through the big west-facing window. In 2006 they renovated the kitchen, demolishing the wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room giving their home an ‘open concept’ living space to keep a better eye on their two young children. Another DIY project was installing a new patio and lawn, planting 6 trees to augment the outdoor living space. They put on a new roof and painted the exterior of the house in 2007. An interesting detail to look for is the stained glass window that was installed upside down. The Russell’s enjoy the easy access to the city, their many friends in the area, the ability to raise their family in the city and stable and increasing property values. They love their diverse Historic block with young families, retirees and single households where everyone cares for their homes. Future plans may involve finishing the basement, rebuilding an interior staircase to the basement, rebuilding the back lean-to area that encloses the cellar staircase and adding a third bath where the upstairs office exists today.
